Michigan Commercial Learner Permit Guide

FLO LLC does not issue or determine eligibility for a Commercial Learner Permit (CLP). The CLP is issued only by the Michigan Secretary of State (SOS). The information below is provided to help you understand the process; it is not legal or eligibility advice and is not a substitute for the official Michigan SOS requirements.

What Is a CLP?

A Commercial Learner Permit lets you practice driving a commercial motor vehicle, under supervision, before you take the CDL skills test. In Michigan, you generally need a valid CLP before you can take your CDL road/skills test.

Typical Steps

  1. Complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) theory instruction with an FMCSA-registered training provider such as FLO LLC.
  2. Pass the required CDL knowledge test(s) for your intended class/endorsements.
  3. Obtain a DOT medical certificate from an examiner on the FMCSA National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.
  4. Apply for your CLP with the Michigan Secretary of State.
  5. Practice under supervision, then schedule your CDL skills test once eligible.

Official Resources

Always confirm current requirements, fees, and required documents directly with the Michigan Secretary of State before applying.

Once You Have Your CLP

FLO LLC students can upload their CLP for staff review from the CDL Qualification section of the student dashboard once logged in. Uploading a copy of your CLP does not by itself verify it — FLO LLC personnel confirm your CLP status after reviewing the document.
